Logo tracing sounds deceptively simple — take an existing mark, redraw it cleanly in vector form, and you are done. But when the brief adds an artistic blur layer to the output, the complexity multiplies quickly. The blur is not just a filter applied at the end; it has to be planned from the very first anchor point.
For technology startups trying to stand out with a sophisticated visual identity, the blurred-logo aesthetic has real appeal. It suggests depth, modernity, and a deliberate departure from the flat, hard-edged marks that saturate the market. Done well, it reads as intentional artistry. Done carelessly, it reads as a technical mistake — the kind of thing that makes print vendors call you and ask if the file is corrupted.
The stakes are practical too. Logos live across a wildly different range of contexts: a 9mm tall mark on a business card, a 3-meter wide graphic on a billboard, a favicon at 16×16 pixels, a header on a pitch deck. Any approach that does not account for all of these simultaneously will produce a mark that works in one context and fails in three others.
What the Work Actually Requires

For the blur radius, the right value depends on the intended output size. At business card scale (roughly 55mm × 90mm), a blur of 2–4px at 300 PPI reads as a subtle soft-focus effect without losing legibility. At billboard scale (3m × 6m), that same absolute pixel value becomes invisible — the radius needs to scale proportionally, often landing between 25–50px at equivalent resolution. This means the blur cannot simply be set once and left alone; it needs to be documented per output size and applied in separate artboards or export configurations.
A useful workflow is to maintain two versions of every traced logo in the master AI file: a clean hard-edge layer locked at the bottom, and a blur-effect layer sitting above it. The clean layer serves as the production fallback; the blur layer is the creative deliverable. This structure also makes it straightforward to adjust the blur intensity if brand guidelines evolve.
File Packaging for Print and Digital Delivery
Final deliverables in AI and EPS format need to be packaged with all linked assets embedded, fonts converted to outlines, and the document color profile explicitly tagged (typically ISO Coated v2 for European print, SWOP v2 for North American). EPS files in particular should be saved with a PostScript Level 3 header for maximum compatibility with commercial print workflows.
For digital use, exporting SVG from Illustrator requires one critical setting: in the SVG Options dialog, raster effects must be set to Embed rather than Link. Without this, the blur effect — which Illustrator renders as a raster object — will appear as a broken image reference when the SVG is opened outside of Illustrator.
What Goes Wrong When This Work Is Rushed
The most common failure is running auto-trace at default settings, accepting the result, and moving straight to the blur phase. Default Image Trace produces paths with hundreds of unnecessary anchor points, and applying a Gaussian blur to a bloated path structure creates unpredictable edge behavior — the blur halos unevenly around complex curves in ways that are nearly impossible to correct after the fact.
A second pitfall is ignoring Document Raster Effects Settings entirely. When this is left at the Illustrator default of 72 PPI, blur effects that look perfectly crisp on screen print as muddy, low-resolution smears. Color drift is a persistent issue in multicolor logo tracing. When each color region is traced separately, small gaps or overlaps between adjacent paths are nearly inevitable. Underestimating the output variation is another trap. Delivering a single AI file with one blur setting for all use cases forces the end user to interpret and re-apply blur values themselves — which defeats the purpose of a professional handoff. A properly prepared delivery includes separate artboards or export presets for at minimum three size categories: small (business card / favicon), medium (web header / presentation), and large (signage / billboard).
Finally, working in isolation without a review pass from a fresh set of eyes consistently produces files with alignment issues and blur artifacts that the original designer has stopped seeing after hours of close work. A second review at actual output size — printed or displayed — catches problems that look fine at 150% zoom in Illustrator.
