What Goes Wrong When This Work Is Rushed

Teams open a slide template, start dropping in data, and end up with a deck that has thirty-plus slides with no coherent argument threading through them. Leadership has to do the synthesis work themselves, which they should not have to do.
Choosing the wrong chart type for the data is a close second. Bar charts used for trend data, pie charts used for competitive share when the differences are too small to read visually, tables used when a visual encoding would communicate the pattern far faster — these choices make the data harder to absorb, not easier.
Color drift across a long deck is a subtle but damaging problem. A simple rule: assign each competitor a fixed hex color at the start and apply it consistently across every chart and matrix in the deck.
Underestimating the polish pass is also extremely common. Finally, building slides instead of a template means that any future update — a re-run of the analysis six months later — requires rebuilding from scratch. A well-structured master slide set with defined layouts, placeholder styles, and a locked color palette takes more time upfront but saves enormous effort on every subsequent iteration.
