The Research Challenge
Sustainable construction is a fast-moving field, and Glasgow sits at an interesting intersection — a city actively working toward net-zero targets while navigating older building stock, heritage constraints, and evolving Scottish Government policy. Our client needed research that captured this complexity without getting lost in it.
The brief called for coverage across three connected areas: sustainable building practices, green and low-impact materials, and energy efficiency solutions being deployed across Glasgow and the wider Scotland region. Beyond the literature review, the client also needed structured case study documentation of real projects that put these practices into action.
The two-week timeline made prioritization essential from day one.
How We Approached It
Helion360 started by building a clear research architecture — dividing the work into thematic areas so findings could be gathered in parallel rather than sequentially. We pulled from Google Scholar, environmental science databases, Scottish Government planning documents, and city-level sustainability strategies to build a source base that was both credible and current.
Rather than presenting raw findings, we synthesized the material into structured sections covering construction methodology, material innovation, retrofit programs, and policy context. This gave the client a document they could read, reference, and share — not a data dump.
For the case study component, we identified specific Glasgow and Scotland-wide projects that illustrated each sustainability theme. Each case study followed a consistent format: project context, methods and materials used, and measurable or reported outcomes. Sources were cited throughout.
What We Delivered
The full research report was completed within the two-week window. It covered the current state of sustainable building across Glasgow and Scotland, grounded in sourced academic and policy literature. The case study section gave the client concrete, documented examples they could reference or build on.
Helion360 structured the final deliverable so that each section stood independently — useful whether the client needed the full report or individual components for separate purposes.
