The Research Challenge
Understanding a local consumer market with enough precision to drive real strategy is harder than it sounds — especially in a market as layered as Guangzhou's beer industry. The client had a clear objective: get accurate, actionable intelligence on how consumers buy, what they prefer, and where opportunities exist. But fragmented secondary data and a tight delivery window made this a genuinely demanding engagement.
What made this project interesting was the dual challenge — conducting original field research while simultaneously making sense of existing industry data, all within a compressed timeline and in a predominantly Mandarin-speaking environment.
Our Research Approach
We built the project around two tracks running in parallel. The primary research phase involved custom surveys, one-on-one interviews with retail and distribution contacts, and focus group sessions designed to uncover how consumers actually think and behave — not just what the aggregate numbers suggest.
At the same time, we worked through available secondary sources to establish a solid market baseline. This included consumption data, competitor analysis, and category trend reports. Helion360 then merged both streams into a unified analysis, letting the primary findings either validate or complicate what the secondary data suggested. This layered approach gave the final output much greater credibility than either track could have produced alone.
All research instruments were adapted for the local context, with Mandarin-language versions used wherever necessary to ensure response quality and accuracy.
What the Research Revealed
The final report covered consumer segmentation, purchase motivations, price sensitivity, brand perception, and channel behavior across the Guangzhou market. Rather than presenting raw data, we organized findings into a structured narrative that connected insights directly to strategic options — making it easier for decision-makers to move from reading to acting.
The research identified specific gaps in how existing players were addressing certain consumer segments, and highlighted pricing and positioning angles the client could realistically pursue given their resources and timeline.
