The Challenge of Building Onboarding From the Ground Up
When the client came to us ahead of their product launch, the onboarding experience was essentially undefined. There were no user personas, no journey maps, and no visual framework that reflected how their audience would actually interact with the product.
The risk was significant. Without grounding the design in real user behavior, the onboarding flow could easily feel generic, confusing, or misaligned with the product's value proposition. What was needed wasn't just good design — it was a research-led process that could produce a flow users would actually follow.
How We Approached the Work
Helion360 started by building the research foundation first. We conducted structured user interviews and translated the findings into personas representing the core audience segments. These personas weren't decorative — they directly informed every design decision that followed.
From there, we mapped the complete user journey, stage by stage. The goal was to identify where users were most likely to disengage and design intentionally around those moments. Wireframes evolved through multiple iterations, each informed by what the research was telling us about user expectations.
Throughout the prototype phase, we maintained close coordination with the client's development team. Design decisions were grounded not just in UX best practices but in what could realistically be built and maintained.
What Was Delivered
The final deliverable was a fully validated onboarding prototype spanning the entire user journey — from first sign-up through to meaningful product engagement. Every screen reflected a deliberate design choice backed by research.
Alongside the prototype, we delivered a documented design system that gave the development team a clear, consistent reference. The designs were aligned with the client's brand guidelines and built with scalability in mind, so the onboarding experience could evolve alongside the product.
The result was an onboarding flow that felt purposeful rather than procedural — one that reduced friction at the points where users are most likely to lose confidence or interest.
