The Research Challenge Behind a New Maldives Consultancy
Launching a consultancy firm from scratch is demanding enough. Doing it in an island archipelago — where client projects span sectors like tourism, hospitality, and local industry, and where data infrastructure varies widely — adds a distinct layer of complexity.
The firm we worked with needed research capacity from day one. Client projects were already coming in, and those clients expected depth. There was no time to build an internal research function gradually. They needed a team that could step in immediately, work across methodologies, and cover geographic ground across different islands on short timelines.
How We Built the Research Operation
Helion360 structured the engagement around a two-track model. Primary and secondary research ran in parallel, not sequentially — which meant desk research was always informing fieldwork, and field findings were always being checked against existing data.
On the primary side, we designed surveys tailored to each project's specific questions, conducted structured stakeholder interviews, and organized focus group sessions. The tourism sector received the most attention, given the consultancy's core client base, but we also covered adjacent industries as new briefs arrived.
Secondary research involved pulling from government publications, regional trade data, sector reports, and comparable market benchmarks. Rather than simply aggregating data, we synthesized findings into structured analyses the consultancy could use directly in client presentations and strategic recommendations.
Delivering Across Islands and Against Tight Timelines
One of the more demanding aspects of this project was the logistics. Research couldn't be conducted from a single location — reaching relevant stakeholders meant traveling across islands, often on short notice. We built flexibility into our workflow so that new research requests could be absorbed without disrupting active deliverables.
The outputs we produced gave the consultancy something concrete to stand behind in its early client engagements. The research was rigorous, well-sourced, and structured for practical use — not just for internal reference.
