The Challenge: Building Without a Research Foundation
The EdTech startup we partnered with had momentum — an active development team, a clear market target, and ambition to spare. What they were missing was a structured way to test their assumptions before those assumptions became expensive product decisions.
Product choices were being made based on intuition and informal feedback rather than validated research. There was no consistent methodology connecting education theory, user psychology, or behavioral data to what was actually being built. For a startup in a field as evidence-sensitive as educational technology, that gap carried real risk.
Our Approach: A Framework Built for Action
Helion360 came in at the research design level — not just to run studies, but to build a repeatable process the team could own long-term.
We started by reviewing what the client already had: internal assumptions, early-stage feedback, and rough data points. From there, we mapped the critical research questions that needed answers before the next development phase and designed study structures to address each one.
The framework drew from educational psychology, learning behavior models, and structured data analysis methods. Each phase had defined collection methods, an analysis protocol, and a documentation standard — so insights were not siloed in one researcher's notes but captured in a format the entire product team could use.
We also built research summaries specifically designed for non-academic readers. Product managers and engineers needed to act on findings, not decode academic language. Every deliverable was shaped with that in mind.
What the Research Delivered
By the end of the engagement, we had completed two full research cycles. The findings directly shaped three product decisions — including how the platform would prioritize features for its initial release and how the user onboarding experience would be restructured.
The client also received a reusable methodology guide, allowing their team to continue structured research without starting from scratch each time. Our executive-style research reports gave the startup documentation they could present to early investors as evidence of a disciplined, insight-driven development process.
The shift was measurable in how the team talked about their product. Decisions that had previously relied on gut feeling were now grounded in validated data — and the internal confidence that came with that was visible.
