Why eBook Design Is Harder Than It Looks
Most people underestimate what it takes to turn a rough draft into a publication-ready eBook. The writing gets finished, the content feels complete, and then the assumption is that dropping it into a template and adding a few images will get the job done. It rarely does.
The gap between a rough draft and a genuinely polished eBook is almost entirely a design problem. Poorly chosen fonts make long-form content exhausting to read. Inconsistent spacing creates a visual rhythm that feels off even when the reader can't name why. A cover that looks like a stock-photo collage signals low production value before a single word is read. For digital formats, these issues reduce time-on-page and credibility. For print formats, they become permanent and expensive to fix.
Done well, eBook graphic design increases perceived authority, supports the content structure, and makes the reading experience feel effortless. Done carelessly, it actively undermines the message the content is trying to deliver. Understanding what the work actually involves is the first step toward getting it right.
What Professional eBook Graphic Design Actually Requires
The work has four distinct phases, and skipping any of them creates compounding problems downstream.
The first is a content audit. Before a single layout decision is made, the structure of the manuscript needs to be mapped — how many chapters, how many heading levels, whether there are data tables, callout boxes, image captions, or sidebars. Each of these elements needs a defined style, and that style needs to be decided before the layout begins, not retrofitted after thirty pages are already formatted.
The second phase is system design. This means establishing the typographic hierarchy, the color palette, the grid, and the master page templates that will govern every page. These decisions are not decorative — they are structural. Every subsequent formatting decision flows from them.
The third phase is layout execution: flowing the content into the established system, placing visuals, handling widows and orphans, and ensuring consistent spacing throughout. This is painstaking work that requires attention at the character level, not just the page level.
The fourth phase is export and format optimization. A print-ready PDF has entirely different requirements from a digital eBook distributed as an EPUB or a screen-optimized PDF. Resolution, color mode, bleed settings, and font embedding all need to be handled correctly for each output.
How to Build the Design System That Makes It Work
Establishing the Typography Hierarchy
Typography is where most amateur eBook designs fall apart. A workable hierarchy for long-form content typically runs three levels: a primary heading (H1 equivalent) at around 28–32pt, section subheadings at 18–22pt, and body text at 10–12pt depending on the typeface. Line spacing for body text should sit between 1.4x and 1.6x the point size — so a 11pt body font wants a leading of roughly 15–17pt. Tighter than that and the text becomes dense and fatiguing. Looser and the page looks unfinished.
Font pairing matters enormously. A reliable approach is to use a serif typeface for body text (Georgia, Garamond, or Minion Pro are proven workhorses) and a clean sans-serif for headings (Inter, Montserrat, or a brand-matched option). More than two typeface families in a single publication creates visual noise without adding meaning.
Setting Up the Grid
The layout grid is what keeps pages feeling ordered and intentional even when the content is varied. For a standard 8.5 × 11 print eBook, a 12-column grid with a 0.25-inch gutter gives enough flexibility to handle single-column body text, two-column callout layouts, and full-width imagery — all within the same consistent framework. Margins should be generous: a minimum of 0.75 inches on all sides for digital, and at least 1 inch on the binding edge for print. Ignoring the binding margin is a common mistake that causes interior text to disappear into the spine.
For chapter openers, the grid should support a visual break — a full-bleed color band, a large chapter number in a display font, or a thematic image. These transitions signal structure to the reader and give the document a sense of pacing.
Cover Design as a Standalone Deliverable
The cover deserves its own design process separate from the interior layout. It operates by different rules: it needs to communicate the subject, tone, and audience at a glance, and it needs to hold up as a thumbnail image roughly 160 × 240px — the size it will appear in most digital storefronts or download pages.
A strong cover typically limits itself to three typographic elements (title, subtitle, and author name), uses one dominant visual element rather than a collage, and maintains high contrast between text and background. The color palette on the cover should connect to the interior palette — typically sharing the primary brand color — but the visual weight can be bolder since it is a single-frame communication rather than a sustained reading experience.
For premium cover design, the cover file needs to be set up at 300 DPI in CMYK color mode with a 0.125-inch bleed on all edges. A digital cover for screen distribution works in RGB and can be exported as a high-resolution JPEG or PNG at 72–150 DPI.
Managing Visuals and Callouts
Any infographics, charts, or illustration assets placed inside the eBook should be sourced or created at a minimum of 150 DPI for digital and 300 DPI for print. Placing a 72 DPI screen-grab into a print layout is one of the most common production errors — it looks fine on screen during layout but prints as a soft, pixelated block. Every image placement should be checked at 100% zoom in the layout application before the file is finalized.
Callout boxes and pull quotes need a consistent visual treatment: a defined background color (typically a tint of the primary brand color at 10–15% opacity), a fixed padding value applied uniformly (0.2 inches on all sides works well), and a typeface distinction from the body text. Consistency here is more important than creativity — readers rely on visual cues to navigate, and inconsistent callout styling creates confusion about what is content and what is emphasis.
What Goes Wrong When This Work Is Underestimated
The most common failure is starting the layout before the content is truly final. Making structural edits to a document after the layout is set causes text reflow that breaks page breaks, disrupts image placements, and requires re-checking every page. A clean content lock — where the manuscript is approved before layout begins — is not optional; it is the only way to protect the design time invested.
Another frequent problem is color inconsistency across chapters. When brand colors are sampled by eye rather than applied from a defined swatch library, they drift slightly across pages. What looks like the same dark teal on page 4 becomes a noticeably different shade by page 40. Every color in the document should reference a named swatch with locked CMYK or HEX values, not an eyedropped approximation.
Underestimating the polish phase is also a persistent issue. Widow and orphan control — preventing single lines from sitting alone at the top or bottom of a column — requires manual review of every text block. Automated settings in InDesign or Affinity Publisher catch most cases, but they do not catch all of them, and a missed widow on a chapter opener looks careless. Budget at least one full pass through the complete document dedicated solely to spacing, alignment, and text flow issues after the layout is otherwise complete.
Finally, treating digital and print as interchangeable outputs creates problems at the export stage. RGB images in a print-bound PDF will shift color unpredictably during printing. CMYK images in a screen-distributed PDF look dull on monitors. These are not minor aesthetic differences — they are production failures that require a second round of file preparation to correct.

The core insight is that industry research eBooks are a system problem, not a decoration problem. The decisions made at the start — the grid, the type hierarchy, the color palette, the image resolution standards — determine the quality of everything that follows. Rushing those foundational decisions to get to the visible layout work almost always results in rework.
