Why Packaging Design Is More Than Making Something Look Pretty
Product packaging is often the first physical encounter a customer has with a brand. For food businesses especially — gelato shops, artisan bakeries, specialty snack makers — the container itself communicates quality, personality, and trustworthiness before a single bite is taken. A well-designed gelato tub cover, for instance, isn't just decoration. It signals whether this is an impulse buy from a gas station freezer or a considered indulgence from a shop with a point of view.
When packaging design is done badly, the consequences are concrete. Misaligned brand colors under fluorescent retail lighting look cheap. Type that reads beautifully on a flat screen becomes illegible when wrapped around a cylindrical container. Artwork that doesn't account for bleed and safe zones goes to print and comes back with cropped logos and missing text. These aren't hypothetical failures — they're the standard outcome when the work is rushed or under-specified.
The stakes are particularly high for small food brands trying to grow. A packaging redesign can be the single highest-leverage visual investment a brand makes, because the product itself is the medium. Getting it right matters enormously.
What Good Packaging Design Actually Requires
Strong product packaging design sits at the intersection of brand strategy, graphic design craft, and production knowledge. The work is not just aesthetic — it requires understanding how a design will behave across the full production lifecycle, from digital file to printed substrate.
First, there is brand alignment. Every visual decision — typeface, color palette, illustration style, hierarchy — needs to map back to what the brand actually stands for. A gelato brand built around "fun, simplicity, and a touch of whimsy" needs a design system that expresses those qualities consistently, not just on one product but across the entire product line.
Second, there is dieline accuracy. A dieline is the structural template that defines exactly where a flat graphic will fold, cut, or wrap. Designing without a precise dieline — or worse, designing on a generic template that doesn't match the actual container dimensions — almost always produces a file that cannot go to print without significant rework.
Third, there is color management. RGB looks very different from CMYK, and both differ from Pantone spot colors. Food packaging commonly uses spot colors or flexographic printing, and the relationship between screen colors and printed output needs to be explicitly managed.
Fourth, there is scalability. A design that works at full size on a 500ml tub needs to remain coherent when reproduced on a 125ml mini cup or a sleeve label. Systems that aren't built to scale break visually at smaller sizes.
How to Approach Packaging Design Work Properly
Start With the Physical Object, Not the Canvas
Before any design work begins, the correct approach is to gather the exact physical specifications of the container. For a round gelato tub, this means the circumference of the lid (not just the diameter), the depth of the rim, the label material (paper, BOPP film, shrink sleeve), and whether the cover is a flat disc, a recessed lid, or a heat-sealed film. Each of these choices changes how the artwork needs to be constructed.
A 110mm diameter lid, for example, has a circumference of approximately 345mm. The artwork canvas should be set at 350mm × 350mm with a 3mm bleed on all sides, giving a final safe zone of roughly 100mm diameter for any critical design elements — logos, product names, legally required text. Working at 300 DPI in CMYK from the start, not converting from a 72 DPI RGB screen comp at the end, is non-negotiable for print-ready output.
Build a Design System, Not a Single Asset
Done well, packaging design doesn't produce one file — it produces a small design system. That system typically includes a primary brand color (one dominant hue that anchors all surfaces), one or two supporting colors, a maximum of two typefaces (one display, one body), and a consistent illustration or graphic motif that can appear at varying scales.
For a playful artisan gelato brand, this might look like: a warm cream base (#F5ECD7 in hex, converting to approximately C0 M7 Y18 K0 in CMYK), a primary action color in a vivid teal or terracotta, a hand-lettered display font for the flavor name at 48pt or larger, and a clean sans-serif at 10pt minimum for ingredient and allergen information. The motif might be a loose watercolor fruit illustration that tiles around the tub's side panel while the lid carries just the logo and flavor name at maximum scale.
Building this as a system — with a master Illustrator or InDesign file that uses paragraph styles, color swatches, and linked artwork — means that when a new flavor needs a cover, the turnaround is hours, not days. The alternative, rebuilding from scratch for each SKU, is where visual drift begins.
Account for the Real-World Viewing Context
A gelato tub sits in a freezer case, often behind glass, often lit with cool LED lighting. Design decisions need to account for that context. High-contrast color combinations — dark backgrounds with light type — perform significantly better than pale-on-pale combinations in refrigerated display environments. A white logotype on a cream background that looks refined on a monitor will nearly disappear in a freezer case.
There is also the 360-degree viewing problem. Unlike a flat label, a round tub cover is seen from multiple angles simultaneously when multiple units sit side by side. The design needs a clear focal point that reads at a glance from any angle — typically the product name and a single dominant visual element — rather than a layout that assumes the viewer is always directly in front.
For a practical test: photograph the printed mock-up in the actual freezer environment at the actual retail distance before approving final production. What looks correct on a desk often reveals problems in context.
What Goes Wrong When This Work Is Under-Resourced
The most common failure mode is skipping the dieline step entirely and designing on a flat rectangle, then attempting to map the artwork to the container shape afterward. This almost always results in distortion, misaligned seams, or elements that fall in the wrong zone. Correcting it after print proofing costs far more time and money than getting the dieline right at the start.
A second frequent problem is color specification left ambiguous. Submitting a file to a print vendor with RGB colors and no Pantone callouts is an invitation for an unpredictable result. Vendors will convert as best they can, and the brand's signature teal may come back significantly greener or bluer depending on the press and substrate. Color specifications should be explicit — CMYK values for process printing, Pantone codes for spot color work — and a printed proof should be reviewed and approved before full production runs.
Third is the legibility trap. Food packaging has mandatory information requirements — ingredients, allergens, net weight, country of origin — and those elements must meet minimum type size standards (generally 1.2mm cap height under EU regulation, roughly 8–9pt equivalent in most food labeling contexts). Designers working primarily in a visual mode often push this text too small or too light, creating compliance problems that require a full file revision.
Fourth is treating the single tub cover as the complete deliverable. Real packaging programs involve multiple SKUs, sizes, and variants. A design that wasn't built as a system forces every new variant to be rebuilt from scratch, which is where color drift, font inconsistencies, and layout variations compound across a product line. Building the master file correctly the first time prevents a much larger problem six months later.
Fifth, and consistently underestimated, is the gap between a design that looks finished on screen and one that is genuinely print-ready. Outline fonts, embed linked images, verify bleed on all four sides, confirm overprint settings, and run a preflight check before submitting — every step skipped becomes a problem that the print vendor will flag, often at the worst possible moment.
What to Remember When Approaching This Kind of Work
Product packaging design rewards patience and systematic thinking at least as much as it rewards visual creativity.
