A market-size slide works best as a single large number with one contextualizing sentence below it — not a paragraph of sourcing footnotes and three nested charts. A competitive comparison slide works as a focused matrix with a maximum of five attributes and four to five competitors, where the differentiating row is visually weighted with a background fill or bold type rather than buried in uniform cells. A timeline slide reads most clearly when it flows left to right on a single horizontal axis with no more than six to eight milestones, labeled in 16pt with the date above the node and the event description below it.
Animation, used deliberately, can reinforce the argument: revealing each bar in a chart one at a time as the presenter speaks to it keeps the audience in sync with the narration. But animation applied globally as a default entrance effect — every element flying in from the left on every slide — adds time without adding meaning and signals a lack of intentional design thinking.
What Goes Wrong When This Work Is Rushed
The most common failure is skipping the structural outline phase and jumping straight into slide design. The result is a deck that looks like a collection of individual slides rather than a single coherent argument. No amount of visual polish fixes a narrative that has not been thought through.
The second pitfall is importing charts directly from Excel without reformatting them for presentation context. Excel charts are built for screen-based analysis at close range. They carry axis labels, gridlines, legends, and data table options that are appropriate for a spreadsheet but create visual noise on a projected slide. Every chart brought into a presentation deck should be rebuilt or substantially reformatted — which typically means removing gridlines, simplifying axis labels, increasing font sizes to at minimum 14pt, and adding a direct annotation that states the chart's conclusion.
A third issue is font and color drift across a long deck. This happens when multiple people contribute slides, or when a template is applied inconsistently. By slide twenty, the heading font is in three different weights, two background colors are competing, and the deck looks like a committee assembled it in the dark. A shared Slide Master and a locked color theme prevent this — but only if they are set up and enforced from the start.
Fourth, teams consistently underestimate the polish phase. Alignment, spacing between elements, padding inside text boxes, transition timing, and export resolution all take meaningful time. Exporting a deck at 96 DPI for a presentation that will be projected on a 4K screen is a visible quality problem. Finally, building every presentation from scratch instead of maintaining a modular slide library is a compounding inefficiency.
