Each slide has one headline — written as a complete sentence that states the insight, not a topic label — one primary visual, and supporting context limited to what is necessary to interpret the visual.
A headline that reads "Revenue Growth" is a label. A headline that reads "Revenue grew 18% YoY, driven entirely by enterprise segment expansion" is an argument. The difference in audience comprehension is substantial, and it costs nothing to make.
What Goes Wrong When This Work Is Under-Resourced
Skipping the narrative outline phase is the most common and most costly mistake. Teams that open PowerPoint immediately tend to build slides that are organized around data categories rather than arguments. The result is a deck that presents information without directing interpretation — the audience sees the numbers but draws its own conclusions, which may not be the intended ones.
Choosing the wrong chart type for the data relationship is a close second. Using a pie chart to compare more than four categories, for instance, makes accurate comparison nearly impossible — human perception cannot reliably judge arc angles. A horizontal bar chart ranked by value communicates the same information in a fraction of the cognitive effort.
Color drift and font drift across a multi-slide deck are subtler problems but equally damaging. When slide 4 uses a slightly different shade of blue than slide 12 — because one was copied from an older template — the deck reads as assembled rather than designed. Underestimating the polish phase is endemic to this kind of work.
