Why Background Color Is More Than an Aesthetic Choice
One of the most overlooked decisions in professional presentation design is background color. It reads as a cosmetic choice — swap grey for black, done — but the downstream effects touch contrast ratios, logo legibility, brand consistency, and the overall emotional tone of the deck. When that decision is made carelessly, the result is a slide that looks almost right, which is often worse than looking obviously unfinished.
Dark-themed presentations have become a dominant visual language for companies that want to signal sophistication, technical credibility, or premium positioning. The problem is that dark grey and true black behave very differently as backgrounds. A dark grey at, say, #2B2B2B reads as moody and textured on screen. Pure black at #000000 or near-black at #0A0A0A reads as decisive, cinematic, and high-contrast. The difference is subtle in a color picker and significant on a projector or investor's laptop screen.
The stakes are real. A presentation that uses inconsistent background values across slides — some at #1A1A1A, others at #333333, others at #000000 — creates visual noise that the audience registers subconsciously as lack of attention to detail. That impression is hard to reverse once formed.
What Getting This Right Actually Requires
Moving from a dark grey background to a true black background sounds like a single step. In practice, it involves a handful of interdependent decisions that compound quickly.
First, the background value itself must be standardized. Every slide in the deck needs to share exactly the same hex value — not an approximation. Drifting by even 10-15 points on the grey scale creates banding when multiple slides are viewed in sequence.
