Why a Raster Logo Eventually Becomes a Real Problem
Most small business logos start life as a JPEG or PNG — a raster file exported from a design app, a photo of hand-drawn artwork, or a scan pulled out of an old brand kit. For a while, that works fine. The file looks sharp on a website at the size it was made for, the business cards print acceptably, and nobody thinks much about it.
Then the need to scale arrives. A banner print shop asks for a vector file. A sign maker needs an AI or EPS. A new designer tries to place the logo in a layout and the edges pixelate the moment the image is enlarged beyond its native resolution. At that point, the original PNG has nothing left to give.
Vector tracing and redraw solves this problem by rebuilding the logo as mathematical paths — shapes defined by anchor points and curves — so it can be scaled to any size without any loss of quality. Done well, the result is a clean, versatile asset that works at 2 inches or 20 feet. Done badly, it introduces artifacts, inconsistent curves, and color errors that quietly undermine every use of the mark going forward.
What a Quality Vector Redraw Actually Requires
The phrase "trace the logo" makes the work sound mechanical, but the quality gap between a rushed trace and a proper redraw is significant. A few things distinguish careful execution from a quick pass.
First, the source file matters enormously. A high-resolution PNG at 300 dpi or above gives an auto-tracer meaningful data to work from. A low-resolution 72 dpi PNG — or worse, a screenshot — produces noisy paths that require extensive manual cleanup regardless of the software used.
Second, auto-trace output is almost never the finished product. Once shapes are clean, colors need to be locked down. Final export for a complete redraw typically produces four files: an AI master file with layers intact, an EPS for print vendors, a high-resolution transparent PNG at 300 dpi for digital use, and an SVG for web use.
What Goes Wrong When This Work Is Rushed
The most common failure is delivering auto-trace output without manual cleanup and calling it done. Auto-traced vectors look fine at screen size and fall apart at print size — the jagged anchor points become visible imperfections on a banner or signage application.
A second frequent problem is color drift. If the vector file's colors are eyedropped from a low-quality source image rather than matched to a confirmed Pantone value, the brand color shifts slightly in every downstream use. Over time, that drift compounds across printed materials, digital assets, and embroidery files, and the brand starts to look inconsistent without anyone knowing exactly why.
Font handling is another common gap. Some redraw work traces the letterforms as custom paths rather than matching the original typeface, which means the client can never edit the text later without re-engaging a designer. Unless the font is genuinely unavailable or custom-drawn, live type with outlines created at export is the correct approach.
File organization also gets overlooked. Delivering a single flattened AI file with no layer structure makes future modification — color updates, lockup variations, size adaptations — much harder than it needs to be. A properly structured file has named layers, grouped elements, and a clear artboard setup.
Finally, tight turnaround windows create pressure to skip the review pass. Printing the vector at multiple sizes — 1 inch, 4 inches, and a simulated 24-inch banner crop — before delivery catches curve inconsistencies that are invisible on screen but obvious in production.
