Why Infographics Fail Before They Even Get Published
There is a particular frustration that comes from investing real time into an infographic — gathering data, writing copy, assembling visuals — only to watch it land flat. It does not get shared. It does not rank. Readers skim past it without absorbing anything. That outcome is common, and it almost always traces back to decisions made early in the process, before a single shape was drawn.

The second requirement is data integrity. If an infographic cites a statistic, that statistic needs a defensible source and a clear label. Visuals that misrepresent scale — bar charts where the bars do not start at zero, proportional circles sized by diameter rather than area — erode trust the moment a careful reader notices them.
The third requirement is format-awareness. An infographic designed for a blog post has fundamentally different constraints than one designed for a PowerPoint slide or a LinkedIn carousel. Web infographics can be tall and scrollable; slide infographics need to fit a 16:9 frame and read from fifteen feet. Treating these as the same format is a common and costly mistake.

Start with a Content Skeleton, Not a Visual Template
The right approach begins with a text outline. This skeleton determines the number of visual sections needed and the logical flow between them.
A common structural pattern is the comparison format: a side-by-side layout that contrasts two states, options, or time periods. Another reliable pattern is the process flow, which uses numbered steps or a directional arrow system to walk a viewer through a sequence. A third is the data-led format, where a single striking statistic anchors the top of the infographic and supporting context builds below it. Choosing the right pattern for the content type — not just what looks interesting — is where experienced designers earn their keep.
Typography and Color Are Structural Decisions
Done well, an infographic uses no more than two typefaces: one for headlines and one for body or label text. The size hierarchy should be enforced consistently — a workable scale is 36pt for the primary headline, 20pt for section headers, and 14pt for data labels and source lines. Mixing three or four fonts, or using decorative typefaces at small sizes, destroys legibility and makes the piece look unfinished.
The color palette deserves the same discipline. Four colors is a practical maximum for most infographics: a primary brand color, a secondary accent, a neutral background tone, and a text color. When a fifth or sixth color appears, it usually signals that the designer ran out of ways to create visual hierarchy through spacing and type weight, and reached for color instead. That is always a structural problem, not a color problem.
For web-published infographics, the export specification matters as much as the design itself. A PNG exported at 1200px wide at 72dpi looks sharp on most screens and loads quickly. SVG export is preferable for icon-heavy infographics that need to scale without pixelation. Embedding alt text that describes the infographic's content is essential for accessibility and contributes meaningfully to search indexing — search engines cannot read text inside an image file.
Building for Reuse Across Channels
An infographic built as a one-off deliverable is an inefficient use of design time. The smarter approach is to build modular components — icon sets, chart templates, section header styles — that can be reassembled for different formats. The full vertical web version, a horizontal slide adaptation, and a cropped square for social media should all derive from the same master file, not be rebuilt from scratch each time.
In PowerPoint or Google Slides, infographic slides work best when built on a strict grid. A 12-column layout at 1280×720px gives enough subdivisions to align icons, charts, and text blocks without them looking arbitrarily placed. Grouping every element on a given section into a named group object makes future editing far more tractable than a flat layer stack of 40 ungrouped shapes.
What Goes Wrong When This Work Is Under-Resourced
The most consistent pitfall is skipping the content audit phase. Designers who jump straight into visual execution typically discover midway through that the data does not support the story being told, or that three of the five sections are redundant. Rebuilding a designed infographic is far more expensive in time than restructuring a text outline.
Another common failure is proportional misrepresentation in charts. A bubble chart where the radius — rather than the area — encodes the data value makes a 4x difference look like a 16x difference. Viewers rarely do the math consciously, but they often sense something is off, and that erodes trust in the brand publishing the piece.
Font drift and color drift compound across a content library. When an organization publishes twelve infographics over a year without a locked style guide, the twelfth will typically use a slightly different blue, a slightly heavier font weight, and a different margin width than the first. Each individual piece looks acceptable; the library as a whole looks inconsistent and amateur.
Underestimating the polish pass is another recurring problem. Getting an infographic to a working draft takes most of the effort, but the final ten percent — tightening spacing so no two elements are ambiguously close, confirming every number against the source, checking that the exported file renders correctly on both retina and standard displays — is what separates a professional deliverable from a passable one. That pass reliably takes longer than expected and is almost always cut when time is short.
Finally, publishing an infographic without an accompanying text description on the same page leaves substantial search visibility on the table. The image file carries no readable text for crawlers. A 150-word summary paragraph below the infographic, written with the same terms a searcher would use, is what allows the page to rank for the content the infographic contains.
What to Remember Before You Start
The two things that matter most: start with a content skeleton and treat the export and publishing specifications as part of the design work, not an afterthought. An infographic that is logically structured, typographically clean, and technically well-exported will outperform a visually ambitious one that fails on any of those fundamentals.
