Each placement has constraints: a standard chest print sits within a roughly 12-by-14-inch boundary, a left chest hit is typically 3.5 to 4 inches wide, and a full back graphic can push to 14 by 16 inches on adult sizing.
Working within those constraints from the start, rather than resizing after the fact, prevents the common problem of detail loss. Fine line work that reads beautifully at full screen resolution can become muddy at actual print size. A useful rule of thumb is that any line weight in a garment graphic should be no thinner than 0.5 points at final print dimensions when going to screen print, and no thinner than 1 point for embroidery digitization.
Typography choices also need to account for production method. A typeface with elegant thin strokes might work perfectly for a hang tag printed offset, but those same strokes will drop out or bleed in a screen-printed application on fabric. The right approach cross-checks every type choice against the intended production method before the design is finalized.
Managing File Handoff for Production
The handoff package for a clothing brand graphic is more involved than handing over a PDF. A properly prepared production file set typically includes the native vector file with fonts converted to outlines, a separated color version showing each ink layer independently, a specification sheet listing exact PMS colors, print dimensions, placement measurements from collar and shoulder seams, and a mockup showing the artwork in position on a garment flat. For embroidery, the package also needs a digitized stitch file — commonly in DST or PES format — because vector art cannot go directly to an embroidery machine.

What Goes Wrong When This Work Is Under-Resourced
The most common failure mode is skipping the visual system phase and going straight into execution. A designer starts sketching garment graphics before the brand palette or typeface has been decided, and the result is a collection of attractive-but-disconnected pieces. Fixing that retroactively is significantly more expensive than building the system properly at the start.
A second frequent problem is delivering artwork in the wrong file format — typically a rasterized JPEG or PNG instead of a vector EPS or AI file. Print vendors who receive raster files will either reject the job or print at a quality the brand cannot stand behind. This is an avoidable problem that shows up regularly when the design side and production side are not communicating clearly.
Color drift across a collection is another pitfall that compounds quietly. If PMS values are not locked and communicated to every vendor, the same brand green can come back slightly different from the screen printer, the embroiderer, and the hang tag printer. On a rack, the inconsistency is immediately visible and reads as lack of quality control.
Underestimating the time required for revision and pre-production review is also a consistent issue. The gap between a design that looks finished on screen and one that is genuinely production-ready is often measured in hours — checking trapping, confirming color separations, reviewing mockups at scale, and verifying that small details survive the translation to fabric.
Finally, building one-off graphics without a template or asset library makes every subsequent season significantly harder. A well-structured brand asset library — organized by collection, placement type, and color variant — is what allows a brand to scale its output without losing consistency.
