A 4-frame cut with the same fade feels clipped. A 30-frame fade feels sluggish. The second distinction is motion path quality. Breakaway elements — objects, type, or shapes that exit or enter the frame with directional force — need to follow paths that feel physically grounded. An element that breaks away upward and to the right should arc slightly, not travel in a perfectly straight diagonal. Straight-line motion reads as programmatic; curved motion reads as designed.
The third distinction is consistency across the piece. A 24-frame ease-in-out applied to one title card needs to match the easing on every subsequent title card in the same sequence. The Fade — Layering Opacity With Motion
Fade animations are often treated as the simplest element in a motion sequence, but they are routinely misused. A flat opacity fade — 100% to 0% over 12 frames — is functional but uninspired. The more effective approach combines opacity with a subtle secondary motion: a type element fading out while drifting 8-12 pixels upward, for example, or a graphic element fading in while scaling from 97% to 100%.
This secondary motion should be almost imperceptible on first viewing. The viewer should not be able to identify what the secondary motion is — they should only feel that the fade has weight and intention. If they notice the secondary motion consciously, the values are too large.
For fade-ins on title cards, a standard approach is a 16-frame opacity ramp from 0% to 100% with an ease-out curve, paired with a 4-pixel upward drift from the starting position using the same ease-out. This combination reads as clean and professional without requiring elaborate rigging.
Blend Modes and Layer Blending in Practice
Layer blending modes in After Effects determine how elements interact with what is beneath them. For motion graphics work on brand content, the most frequently useful modes are Screen (for light elements over dark backgrounds), Multiply (for textured overlays), and Overlay (for adding depth to flat color elements). Add mode is occasionally useful for glow or light-leak overlays but tends to blow out quickly — capping the opacity of an Add-mode layer at 30-40% keeps it usable.

Linear keyframe interpolation is the default in After Effects and the enemy of professional-looking motion. Every keyframe in a finished piece should be reviewed in the Graph Editor. Leaving keyframes on linear interpolation is the single most reliable way to make finished motion work look unpolished, and it is easy to miss because the preview can look acceptable at normal playback speed.
Font and color inconsistency compounds across a series of deliverables. If a brand's primary typeface is set at 52pt in one social asset and 48pt in another, the series looks assembled by multiple people without a brief. Type hierarchies — headline, subhead, caption — should be defined numerically at the start of a project and applied as text styles or noted in a reference sheet that governs all assets in the series.
Export settings are where a significant amount of work is silently lost. Rendering to H.264 directly from After Effects produces inferior quality compared to rendering to a lossless intermediate (ProRes 422 or DNxHR) and then compressing in Adobe Media Encoder.
