The colors are in the neighborhood but not the brand's actual hex values. The layout shifts subtly from slide to slide in ways that are hard to articulate but impossible to ignore.
This problem is especially common when a presentation needs to be rebuilt or migrated — from PowerPoint to Google Slides, from an old template to a new one, or from a rough internal draft to a polished client-facing deck. The stakes are real. A pitch deck for a tax credits advisory firm, for instance, carries implicit credibility signals with every design choice. Investors and prospects read inconsistency as a proxy for operational sloppiness. The first is a complete brand audit. Avoid 3D chart styles entirely. They distort proportional reading and look dated. Flat, single-axis bar and column charts with direct data labels — placed on top of bars rather than relying on a legend — communicate faster in a live presentation context.
What Goes Wrong When This Work Is Rushed
The most common failure is skipping the Slide Master entirely and building every slide from scratch. The result is a deck where the logo is 2px lower on slide seven than on slide one, the footer disappears on certain layouts, and the background color is subtly different on slides that were duplicated from different source files. These differences are invisible to the builder after hours of close work — and glaringly obvious to a fresh set of eyes.
A second frequent problem is working from approximate brand colors. Eyedropping a color from a JPEG logo file produces a degraded hex value — JPEGs compress color information, so the sampled value may be off by 10 to 15 points in any channel. The correct approach is always to source hex values from the official brand guidelines or from an SVG or PNG-24 version of the logo asset.
Typography drift is a third pitfall. When body copy size varies between 15pt and 17pt across slides because each was manually set, the deck reads as assembled rather than designed.
