The Challenge
An animation studio developing a series of short films needed a skilled production partner capable of handling both the visual design and animation sides of an ambitious 2D project. The scope demanded more than technical execution — it required a deep understanding of character expression, narrative pacing, and the kind of visual consistency that holds a series together across multiple episodes. With multiple characters to design, scene transitions to choreograph, and a coherent world to build from scratch, the project demanded a team that could think like storytellers as much as animators. Adobe After Effects was the chosen platform, requiring mastery of puppet rigging, motion paths, and layered compositing at a level that would hold up to a demanding production schedule.
Our Approach
Helion360 began with a thorough creative brief, working closely with the studio's direction team to establish character style guides, color palettes, and a motion language that would remain consistent across every episode. Character designs were developed with animation in mind — shapes were simplified for fluid rigging without sacrificing personality or expressiveness. Each character was built using puppet pin rigs and shape layer systems within After Effects, enabling smooth, believable movement across a wide range of emotional performances. Scene composition followed a storyboard-first methodology, ensuring that every cut, pan, and transition served the narrative before a single frame was rendered. Background environments were designed as layered assets to allow depth through parallax motion, giving the world a sense of physical space even within a flat 2D aesthetic.
The Outcome
The result was a fully produced 2D animated short film series delivered on schedule and ready for distribution — featuring polished character animation, expressive performances, and a visual style that remained coherent and distinctive across every installment. Each episode combined detailed character sequences with cinematic scene-setting, achieving the kind of storytelling quality the studio needed to present their work to distributors and audiences alike. The series demonstrated that production-grade 2D animation is achievable at pace without sacrificing creative integrity, and the studio left with a complete asset library — including character rigs, scene templates, and background layers — enabling continued production beyond the initial engagement.
Helion360 brings the same craft and story-first thinking to every animation project, from short-form series to brand films and explainer content.
