The Challenge
A research client came to us with a substantial and methodologically complex dataset: 396 participant responses spanning 7 demographic variables, 28 Likert scale questions, and 4 open-ended qualitative prompts. The demographic dimensions alone — covering age, gender, education level, employment status, and geographic location — required careful segmentation before any meaningful cross-analysis could begin. The Likert items probed satisfaction levels, behavioral frequencies, and attitudinal opinions, while the open-ended questions were designed to surface nuanced participant experiences that quantitative measures simply could not capture. The challenge was not just the volume of data, but the need to bridge structured quantitative responses with unstructured qualitative narratives in a coherent, rigorous analytical framework — all executed within NVivo.
Our Approach
Helion360 began by structuring the dataset inside NVivo, organizing all 396 cases with properly coded demographic attributes to enable meaningful group comparisons throughout the analysis. The 28 Likert scale items were treated as sentiment and frequency indicators, with responses aggregated and cross-tabulated against key demographic segments to surface patterns in how different groups responded. The four open-ended questions were approached through thematic coding, with the team conducting an inductive pass to identify emergent themes and a subsequent deductive pass to validate those themes against the quantitative findings. Node hierarchies were built to represent recurring concepts, and matrix coding queries were used to link qualitative themes back to specific demographic profiles and Likert response clusters. The result was an integrated analytical architecture that allowed both the numeric and narrative layers of the data to speak to each other rather than exist in isolation.
The Outcome
The completed NVivo project delivered a fully coded and query-ready dataset, a structured thematic framework derived from the open-ended responses, and a set of cross-tabulated findings that connected participant attitudes and behaviors across all demographic segments. The client received a clear analytical output that could directly support academic reporting, stakeholder presentations, or further statistical testing. The qualitative themes were mapped back to quantitative trends, providing the kind of mixed-methods depth that standalone tools like SPSS or Excel cannot replicate. The final deliverable gave the research team immediate interpretive clarity and a reusable NVivo project file they could build on for future phases of the study.
