The Data Was There. Making Sense of It Was the Hard Part
When we hosted our first user event after launching the health app, I expected a wave of useful feedback. What I got instead was a wave of spreadsheet chaos. Survey responses poured in from multiple forms, some with inconsistent field names, others with blank rows, duplicate entries, and free-text answers that ranged from one word to full paragraphs.
I sat down thinking I could knock this out in an afternoon. A few pivot tables, some filtering, maybe a chart or two. I had used Google Sheets plenty of times before, so it seemed manageable.
It was not manageable.
Where the DIY Approach Broke Down
The first problem was data cleaning. Responses had been collected across three separate forms, each with slightly different column structures. Merging them meant reconciling inconsistencies that could not simply be fixed with a find-and-replace. Some columns needed to be split, others needed to be standardized, and a handful of entries had formatting issues that broke my formulas entirely.
Once I got past the cleaning stage, the analysis itself became the bottleneck. I knew what questions I wanted to answer — where are users most engaged, which app features are getting positive signals, and where is the drop-off happening — but translating those questions into the right Google Sheets formulas and visual outputs was taking far longer than I had budgeted. I had a week to deliver findings to the rest of the team, and I was already two days in with very little to show.
I also realized that the visualizations I was building looked rough. The charts were functional but not in a format that could be shared in a team meeting or used in a presentation without embarrassment. The data was there. The story it needed to tell was not.
