Project Overview
The client needed a fully functional AI-powered chat feature embedded within an existing web application. The goal was to enable users to receive personalized pitching messages in real time, driven by OpenAI's GPT API. The platform was already hosted on AWS, and the existing codebase used React on the frontend and Node.js with Express on the backend. At Helion360, we took ownership of the full implementation — from architecture decisions to final deployment.
The Challenge
The core complexity was not simply connecting to the OpenAI API. The real challenge was building a chat interface that felt native to the existing application, maintained session context across exchanges, and generated pitching messages tailored to each user's specific inputs and data profile. On top of that, the delivery window was two weeks — a tight but workable timeline given our experience with similar AI-driven feature builds.
We also had to ensure the backend handled prompt engineering cleanly, so GPT responses stayed on-topic and consistently produced structured, professional pitching copy rather than generic output.
Our Approach
We began by auditing the existing prototype code and data models to understand what context was already being captured about users. This informed our prompt construction strategy on the backend. We designed a stateful chat session model on the Express server, allowing each conversation thread to carry relevant user context forward into each GPT API call.
On the frontend, we built a responsive React chat UI that integrated cleanly into the existing application shell. Message streaming was implemented to improve perceived response speed, making the interaction feel immediate and fluid.
Implementation
The Node.js and Express backend managed all communication with the OpenAI API, handling token limits, prompt formatting, and error fallback logic. AWS infrastructure — including existing compute and environment configurations — was leveraged without requiring significant rearchitecting.
Helion360 structured the codebase with maintainability in mind, separating prompt templates from business logic so the client could iterate on messaging tone and structure post-launch without engineering involvement.
Delivery
The full feature — chat UI, backend integration, GPT-powered personalized response logic, and AWS-compatible deployment — was delivered within the agreed two-week timeline. The client received clean, documented code and a working feature ready for end-user testing.
